Ashanti, also known as Asante, are part of the Akan people and are native to the Ashanti Region of modern-day Ghana. Twi is spoken by over nine million Asante people as a first or second language.

Akan people are believed to have migrated to their current location from the Sahara desert and Sahel regions of Africa into the forest region around the 11th century. Many Akans told their history as it started in the eastern region of Africa as this is where the formation and development of the Akan as we know them today happened.

Oral traditions of the ruling Abrade (Aduana) tribe state that Akans originated from the ancient Ghana Empire. The Akan people migrated from the north through Egypt and settled in Nubia. Around 500 CE (5th century), due to the pressure exerted by the Aksumite kingdom of Ethiopia, Nubia was shattered and the Akan people moved west and established small trading kingdoms. These kingdoms grew and around 750 CE the Ghana Empire was formed. The Empire lasted from around 750 CE to 1250 CE and shrunk as a result of the introduction of Islam in Western Sudan, due to the Muslims imposing their religion, with their ancestors eventually leaving for Kong (i.e. present-day Ivory Coast).
